Dyeing
Remember the pound of Corriedale that I spun when I first got my wheel? I'm using it to learn how to dye. It's bad beginner yarn and it is perfect for this, because if this had been the good yarn, I would have been crying.
The picture below is my very first attempt. It's food coloring and set in the microwave. I followed the directions and managed to scorch the yarn. The middle bit was yellow and blue. The only good thing about it is that if I were actually going for green to brown, this is what I would want it to look like.
For the second attempt, I left more water in the mini skein and used the microwave in 30-second intervals. The brown bit on this is the tie, not scorch.
And here they are completely dry:
I'll be playing with food coloring for a bit longer before I break into the good dyes, and I need to see if I can turn down the heat on the microwave.
Although the experiment doesn't qualify as a success, I really like the two mini skeins on the right. The middle skein is something to aim for, without accomplishing it by scorching the yarn.
